It’s thought the magical phrase “open sesame” used to open the mystical cave full of treasure in Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (originally “Sesame, ouvre-toi” from Les Mille et une nuits), may allude to the opening of sesame pods to reveal the seeds within when the plant matures. Try toasting these lightly in a dry fry pan and then sprinkling on your favourite salad. Magical incantations optional.
