Ah anchovies. These little salty critters are perhaps the most divisive of foods, but I’m all for a couple of these in a salad, on a pizza, or just on toast with ricotta cheese and fresh tomato…

There is a lot of overfishing of anchovies, but these are MSC certified, meaning the fishery that catches and processes these anchovies has been independently assessed for their impacts on wild fish populations and the ecosystems they belong to, ensuring they adhere to requirements across three principles;

  • only fishing healthy stocks,
  • being well-managed so stocks can be fished for the long-term, and
  • minimising their impact on other species and the wider ecosystem.

Yurrita (the only brand of anchovies that holds this certificate) are a family business of 150 years based in the port of Mutriko on the Basque coast. The anchovies are cleaned, salted, then cured for a miniumum of 20 months before being packed into tins, bathed in olive oil.
